Therapy Services
Brian Poynter, LPC/MHSP
Individual therapy and couples therapy are provided in-person in Nashville (Music Row) and virtually throughout Tennessee.
Individual Therapy
I work with individuals and various stages of life over the age of 18, ranging from an acute mental health diagnosis (such as depression, bipolar disorder, etc.) to those with life transitions, career challenges, relationship issues and family dynamics. Individual clients generally present with either a major life change happening or a lack of knowledge of how their thought patterns have affected their mood.
I have extensive experience working with all types of diagnoses including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and personality disorders. Having spent 14 years working at an acute care inpatient psychiatric facility, I have the knowledge base and comfort level to address most mental health diagnoses.
$190/session
Couples Therapy
I have significant experience working with couples as early as the dating relationship, through pre-marital counseling, marital lifespan counseling, and at times assisting couples who wish to respectfully end their relationship. Each stage requires a different approach, which I have fine-tuned over many years of working with couples.
$225/session
My Therapy Style
My style is eclectic, as I determine with the client what will work best as an approach to their issues. Historically, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy when it is obvious that it will help provide structure and education for a client to better understand their thinking and how it affects their mood.
My goal for you in therapy is to equip you with the tools necessary to be confident in handling what life throws at you. In my opinion, a great therapist coaches you toward self-actualization, and gives you the emotional reassurance that you have learned what is needed to handle most situations that arise in life.
What to Expect
My typical session begins with a brief check-in, followed by the work that will be most productive in the moment, and finally to wrap up with encouragement to use the skills and tools learned and to self-analyze what works and what doesn’t so that we can constantly refine what will be best for you.
Apprehension around starting therapy is normal.
After all, you are spending your hard-earned money to sit in a stranger’s office and potentially share thoughts that you have never voiced, even to yourself. Know that, as a therapist, my goal is for you to feel safe and to create an atmosphere where sharing your struggles is a relief for you. This is the one place you can “unload” with someone who is judgement-free and not otherwise related to your life.
